'The livelihoods approach puts poor people at the centre of development … increases the targeting opportunities … and provides overall coherence, significantly increasing the effectiveness of service delivery'

Is this course for me?

This comprehensive three day course is targeted at practitioners, consultants and advisers from development agencies and NGOs wanting to embrace the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach.

What are the aims of the programme?

To present the principles and a working framework for the 'SL' approach through presentations, case studies and challenging debate enabling participants to understand the importance of technical and sectoral programmes and skills in people-centred and holistic development.

Development agencies, DFID, UNDP, and NGOs, such as CARE International and Oxfam, have adopted the sustainable livelihoods approach, to ensure people and especially poor people are at the centre of development.

How much can I achieve?

By the end of the course, you will:

  • understand and be confident using the 'SL' principles, framework and 'pentagon' for analysis and programme proposals.
  • understand the important relationship between technical expertise and interventions in both the wider context of people using the services and the political and social environment determining their livelihoods.
  • understand how SLA inter-relates with other frameworks such as project cycle management, rights-based and sector wide approaches and budgetary support.
